1 Downtown, 12 Ways to Celebrate: Activities for Kids

The kids are out of school for winter break and you want to keep them busy to avoid the dreaded phrase “I’m bored”. Instead of sitting around the house, bring them downtown for some great interactive, fun and even educational activities. Here are some of our favorite downtown activities for kids:

Discovery Gateway: Choose from several exhibits to spark curiosity in your child. Build, act, solve puzzles or work with your hands. Time flies in this amazing museum. Design and construct a building at the Block Party exhibit, practice saving lives with a model helicopter and much more. See all of the exhibits HERE.

Clark Planetarium: Explore the cosmos from the safety of Planet Earth. “Walk” on Mars”, touch, hold and lift actual meteorites and learn about space through one of the many free exhibits. Additionally, the Hansen Dome Theater and the IMAX Theater have holiday themed and educational shows such as Let it Snow: A Holiday Music Journey. See all of the exhibits and showtimes HERE.

The Leonardo: The Leonardo is named after Leonardo da Vinci to honor the Renaissance Man’s numerous accomplishments. Following in this inventor’s footsteps, the Leo blends several STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) exhibits. For example, you can learn about how water connects the world or even see the faces of homelessness in the No Fixed Address exhibit with your child and teen, you might learn something for yourself. The Leonardo is currently featuring the Mummies of the World Exhibit. Experience the world's most extensive mummy collection HERE.

Ice Skating at the Gallivan: Hot chocolate, snacks and hours of skating on the ice. This downtown tradition is always a hit with the kids! The best times to skate are on weekdays and weeknights when the crowds aren’t as large See the hours HERE.

Fountain shows: Both City Creek Center and The Gateway house amazing holiday themed fountain shows that play at the top of every hour at City Creek and at night at the Gateway!

Temple Square: Take the Jingle Bus from one of its five stops around downtown to experience the lights of Temple Square. There are 35 acres of lights at Temple Square, as well as a reflection pool and a roof observatory on the Church Office Building. During EVE, Assembly Hall and the Tabernacle offer free live music and shows. See all Temple Square activities HERE.

Jazz Games: Grab a hot dog and watch the Utah Jazz’s group of young up and coming players on their home court. There will be dunks and amazing feats of athleticism that all ages will enjoy. Get your tickets HERE.
